AmeriCorps VISTA

Community Engagement Coordinator

Full time, beginning December 2018

Responsibilities.  The VISTA will strengthen the Food Literacy Project’s capacity to serve low-income youth by diversifying resource development efforts and meaningfully engaging stakeholders in our work. Specific job tasks include:

  • Support and implement a targeted community organizing outreach effort to support the organization’s expansion to Iroquois Farm by engaging community residents, neighborhood leaders, community partners, and stakeholders
  • Orchestrate regular canvassing in the neighborhood.
  • Build and maintain relationships in the neighborhood with schools, community organizations, healthcare facilities, neighborhood businesses, and others.
  • Plan and implement community events and engagement.
  • Plan and implement a targeted outreach effort to recruit new volunteers, retain regular volunteers, and inspire new volunteers to become donors.
  • Plan and implement volunteer work days, with special focus on recruiting volunteer teams from companies and community groups with the goal of creating lasting partnerships.
  • Maintain current volunteer manual and provide orientation and engagement with volunteers; update and manage approved forms, policy, and procedures for volunteers.
  • Assist with corporate sponsorship, corporate engagement, and relationship building throughout the community.


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Share a commitment to the Food Literacy Project’s mission. Experience as a volunteer or paid staff for a small, community-based non-profit organization is helpful.
  • Self-directed and organized, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Experience and adaptability with using a computer and appropriate software.
  • Adaptability, creativity and independence with a willingness to seek and accept direction as appropriate.
  • Experience teaching or working with children or the desire to learn; experience with diverse populations, especially at-risk youth, is beneficial.
  • Background or interest in environmental education, sustainable agriculture, community food security, cooking, and/or nutrition are also assets.
