Keith McKenzie is the chair of the Kentucky Composting Council. As chair, Keith is responsible for the implementation of the Council’s mission, goals, and objectives. Keith, along with a small team of volunteers, aims to increase compost education, the number of composters, and its use.
Keith’s love for compost comes from a sustainability perspective. Around 1988, Keith and his wife purchased 32 acres of farm in McClain County, Kentucky. Soon after, Keith moved to Louisville to complete Social Work studies. While in school, he maintained several small garden plots. In 2004, Keith purchased his first tract of many in Breckenridge County. Currently, Keith and his family manage 71 acres.
In 2019, Keith McKenzie gained a keen understanding of sustainability. Their farming operation underwent a complete makeover, deciding it was time to become a certified organic farm. This meant learning how to engage in sustainable agriculture practices, resulting in their farm becoming a Certified Organic Farm in 2022.
