Program Associate

Full time, beginning February 2019

Responsibilities.  The Program Associate works under the direction of the Program Coordinator to plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate the Food Literacy Project’s programs and community outreach efforts. The Program Associate provides direct service and creates and disseminates communications.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implement hands-on education programs on the farm, in schools, and in the community.
  • Represent the Food Literacy Project at community events.
  • Support the organization’s community engagement initiative.
  • Collect and enter program constituent and volunteer information into databases.
  • Implement the evaluation plan (administer surveys, enter survey data into databases, etc.).
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Learning Garden and other program areas at Oxmoor and Iroquois Farms.
  • Execute site management and volunteer projects alongside staff, program participants, and volunteers.
  • Contribute to the organization’s communications plan via print and electronic newsletters, website, social media, appeals, annual report, and other communications as needed.
  • Create program and marketing materials (i.e. program brochures, newsletters, fliers, posters, etc.).
  • Create compelling reports for stakeholder groups (participants, partners, grantors, donors, etc.).
  • Complete administrative tasks and other duties associated with a small nonprofit as required.


  • Experience teaching or working with children; experience with diverse populations, especially at-risk youth, preferred.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with others.
  • Self-directed and organized, with excellent communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Adaptability, creativity, and independence, with a willingness to seek and accept direction as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates pride in work and exhibits excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to define and ensure the achievement of short- and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates a solution-oriented approach, an ability not only to identify but also solve problems.
  • Shared commitment to the Food Literacy Project’s mission. Embodies our core values: energy, roots, discovery, cultivation, and justice.  
  • Be physically able to participate in and lead farm and garden work projects (walking, lifting, kneeling, crouching, etc.) and to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Background in or interest in environmental education, sustainable agriculture, community food security, cooking, and/or nutrition.
  • Experience and adaptability when using a computer.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or comparable experience.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
